June 20th, 2011: Autonomy and Relationship as a Path to Wholeness
Autonomy on the one hand, and Relationship on the other hand. As humans, we often find ourselves showing preference for our 'alone time' or we seek comfort in the company of others. Sometimes, we think that we've been with others all too much and seek then to be alone, while at other times we become acutely aware of how alone we feel and seek connection with another to remedy that. And thus we bounce back and forth, seeking to be fulfilled--first through one and then through the other--but often ultimately coming up empty.
From marriages and intimate partnerships, to families, to work teams, to our engagement with our communities, the question of our autonomy in the context of being connected to others is big. How do I hang on to my sense of self in the context of relationship to other? Similarly, the question of our connection with others in the context of our separateness is equally big. How can I fully experience connection with another, given the fact that I come into this life alone, I leave this life alone, and no one else can ever inhabit--and therefore share--my experience?
What is the co-creative tension of this Meta-Polarity called Autonomy and Relationship, and how does the dance of these two poles in a polarity actually serve our human experience? We shall explore these questions and more on the next Polarity Pathways Dialogue call.
